Going AI-native: what it means for a trade business

General information, not legal or qualified advice. Last checked 31 Oct 2026. Examples use a fictional business.

For a trade business, going AI-native doesn't mean becoming a tech company. It comes down to three things:

  1. Your know-how is written down. How your firm handles a job, a complaint or a deadline lives somewhere your people and your software can both use it, not only in two people's heads.
  2. The routine back-office work gets done. Logging requests, chasing people, sending updates, keeping records and portals current: the work that fills the week but doesn't need your best judgement.
  3. Your people still decide. Exceptions, money and anything sensitive stay with the team, and nothing goes out without the approval you set.

This guide explains each part in plain terms and links to practical how-tos.

The difference isn't the software. It's whether your way of working has been captured and handed over one job at a time, with clear rules on what needs a person.

The two halves

Your know-how, captured

Every trade business runs on know-how: which client wants to be asked before any spend, what to say when a job slips, which supplier answers on a Saturday. Captured properly, that know-how keeps the business running when someone is off or leaves, and it is what any software needs before it can follow your way of doing things.

A coworker for the routine work

Once the know-how is written down, the routine work that follows from it can be handed over to an AI coworker: something that takes on recurring back-office jobs, follows your procedures, and asks before it acts.

Where to start

Don't start with a strategy document. Start with one routine job that eats your team's week, write down how you do it, and hand it over with clear rules. Our AI-native checklist walks through it step by step.

What this looks like in one trade today

Letting agencies in Scotland are the first trade Lorework is built for. There it follows the agency's own procedures, writes in the agency's tone, and logs into property and listing portals to update records and check statuses. Anything that needs a person comes back to the team. See Lorework for letting agents in Scotland or all letting-agent pages.

How Lorework fits

Lorework is an AI coworker that learns how a business works.

Questions

What does AI-native mean for a small business?

Your way of working is written down, routine back-office jobs are done from it, and your people approve what matters. It's a change in how work gets done, not a tool purchase.

Do we need to replace our software?

No. Lorework works through the web systems you already use.

Does it replace staff?

No. It takes on the routine work; your people keep the judgement and the final say.
